Excalibur

Part of an ongoing project investigating place-identity and heritage, I was fortunate enough to spend time with some of the residents of the Excalibur estate, South London.

At the time of the project, the residents had been locked in a six-year battle with the local council who were threatening the prefab World War II housing with redevelopment. A controversial bid for heritage status was still on-going, with many of the residents torn between sentimental loyalty to the estate's unique character, and the desire to be relocated to new social housing schemes.

The project concluded with a set of colouring books featuring the buildings on the estate, which I then gave to local nursery and primary schools, with the children finally presenting their work at a community workshop at the community centre on the estate.
