Harriet McDougall (14/08/1988) :
I would describe myself first and foremost as an observer. Fascinated by the physical world and the perceptions we project onto it, I like to design in response to an environment. Preoccupied mostly with teasing the user around to my point of view, to change an opinion or provoke a response from situations usually ignored or overlooked. I like to surprise people with what they already know, and inject a little sunshine into the world.
Growing up in the rural backwaters of Norfolk, I became adept at generating my own entertainment in the form of pencil and paper. I usually draw what surrounds me, trying to capture a moment or scenario- to cement an experience for myself, to make it more real. I’m an extremely committed and determined person, and have taken on many professional and personal design projects in addition to college. These include commissioned graphics and illustration for editorials, packaging desgn and website design.
I’m lively, versatile and outgoing, and I enjoy working with people and in a team environment. I’m an effective communicator, and my love of travel has given me an open mind, a positive attitude and the ability to approach any situation with patience and a smile.
Travel is my greatest passion. Since I was sixteen most of my energy [and practically all of my money] has been dedicated to feeding my chronic independent travel habit. I never feel more alive than finding myself totally alone in an alien land with no concept of language or geography.
During my year out in 2008, I spent eight months in Asia when I visited China, India, Malaysia, Borneo, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Sri-Lanka. In 2009 I spent three months in Africa traveling Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
I use my travels as a platform from which to create graphic journals documenting my observations.
It is my ambition to publish my own graphic guides for independent female travelers.
Stuff I like:
Books: Angela Carter, Oscar Wilde, Stephen Donaldson, Robert Rankin, Garth Nix, Philip Pullman, Will Self, George Orwell (and so on); language is a massive inspiration to me. I am also unhealthily excited by comics, artbooks and graphic novels, a habit which is beginning to take its toll on my bank balance as well as my (rather limited) shelf space.
Toys, board-games, cartoons and video-games. NintendoNintendoNintendo.
I like anything old and dusty, anything that comes close to magic or anything that can make me believe in magic. Fantasy geek. Yes I am.CONTACT ME: hello@harrietmcdougall.com or dt802hm@gold.ac.uk
